State Of California Income Tax Forms – Information To Know About Them
Carl LaFresnaye

If you live in the state of California, chances are you have to file your state taxes forms every year.

Very few people don't have to file – those who have no income or are too young are among them. If you have to file California income taxes, here are a few things to know about the state income tax forms for California.

Where To Get Them?

If you filed taxes last year, chances are you will get your new state tax forms in the mail. If you are filing through the mail, these are the easiest to use. Just complete them and mail them in, using the mailing label that the state sent you. It is the best way to have them processed quickly.

New York state should not reimpose a stock transfer tax as this would make Wall Street firms move to other cities such as New Jersey's Newark, or other states like Connecticut, Governor David Paterson...

If you didn't get the state tax forms in the mail, you can get the forms for California – and any other state – on their website. It is easy to find using any search engine, such as Google, Yahoo, etc. At the site, there is a link at “Forms” that will give you everything you need.

There are also other sites that have the state income tax forms – they are usually self-help sites around the Internet.

How To Use The Online Forms

When you go to the online site to get the state tax forms, you can either open the form, fill it out and print it, or save the form onto your computer or flash drive for completing later (either completing on the computer to print out or to print out blank forms to complete on paper). Either works fine, though most people need to gather the pertinent information before they can fill out the form, so saving the form for fill-in use later is preferable.

Important to note: For some versions of the online forms, which are created in Adobe Acrobat, it will let you fill them in online, but you won't be able to save the information on the form. You must print the form once it is filled in, and the next time you open the form, it will be blank again. If you want to retain a copy of your tax form electronically, be sure you use a form that is savable once filled in.

What Else Do I Need?

For the basic form – the CA 540 – you will need to have already completed this year's tax form for the IRS. Some of the information from the federal form will be transferred directly to the CA 540, or to the CA (540) form, which is the form on which the adjustments are made between the federal form and the state tax form. The state tax form refers to the specific line
