Jazz at Newport adds free lecture
An exciting addition to the dynamic line up planned for the four days of the Jazz at Newport Festival will be an introduction to Jazz by Carl Woideck, University of Oregon instructor of jazz, rock, and blues music histories. Woideck is an author and professional saxophonist who performs regularly in Eugene and, in the 1960s and 70s, performed with musicians ranging from Bonnie Raitt and Robert Junior Lockwood to members of the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. He has hosted radio shows on Eugene's KLCC-FM since 1976, and currently presents The Soul of Jazz on that station from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Wednesday. The free lecture, which will be held in the Studio Theatre at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 is entitled "Person and Peplowski: Master Improvisers" and will introduce the jazz audience to the rich talent in town for the Jazz at Newport Festival. Following Woideck's lecture, there will be a free Jazz Dialogue at 10 a.m. Phil Brenes of the Jazz Society of Oregon will interview John Clayton, legendary bassist.
