Salmon Bakes on the Oregon Coast
SATURDAY, SEPT 16 - Depoe Bay, Oregon - It all started in the 1930s, when locals met and shared the day's catch, along with all their fish stories. Fresh fish was cooked in large, cast-iron pans over open fires and became known as the "Free Fish Fry." Now the salmon is prepared the way generations of coastal Native Americans have prepared it. At this year's bake, more than 3,000 pounds of salmon will be slowly roasted on alder stakes over an 85-foot-long fire pit, accompanied by song and Native American dance. Hours and cost: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. A shuttle makes eight stops throughout the day from Sentry Market (north of Depoe Bay) and the Whistle Stop (south of the bridge) to the Salmon Bake in Depoe Bay City Park. Park anywhere along there. Advance tickets: $13, $7 age 9 and younger; day of the bake: $15, $8 age 9 and younger. More info: 1-877-485-8348, www.depoebaychamber.org
