Halloween silent auction in Newport, Oregon
Tom Kerns sorts donations for the CCCA Halloween Party and Benefit Auction. A wide range of gifts and services, from art work, massages, glass floats, overnight stays, restaurant meals, piano lessons to note cards, await attendees at the silent auction during the inaugural Concerned Citizens for Clean Air (CCCA) Halloween Party and Benefit, to be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Newport Visual Arts Center. The party will be feature music by Rick Bartow, June and Joren Rushing, and folk singer Barbara Turrill. People are encouraged to come in costume attire; prizes for best costumes will be awarded. Oceana Natural Foods Co-op will have hot soup, wraps, desserts and beverages available. Andrew Rodman, local performance poet, will emcee the event. Admission is by donation. "Everyone is welcome to come enjoy good music and good fun," Maxine Centala, one of the founders of CCCA, said. "There will be traditional Halloween decorations, good food, a raffle, and more." The raffle prize is an overnight stay at the deluxe Heathman Hotel in Portland, a pair of tickets to Oregon Ballet Theater's "The Nutcracker," and a $50 gift certificate for dinner at Higgins. Raffle tickets are already on sale at two Newport locations: the 9th Street Gallery and at Oceana. They will also be on sale at the benefit until the time of the drawing. One need not be present to win. CCCA works to improve local air quality through education and collective action. The organization's service area extends north to Lincoln City, south to Florence, and east to the divide of the Coast Range. "Clean air is one of the attractions of the coast as a travel destination and a place to live, but it is fragile and in need of protection. We are increasing awareness of the things we can do locally to improve air quality," Diana Purdy, co-founder of the organization, stated. According to Purdy, proceeds from the benefit will help fund education and awareness efforts, and if enough money is raised it could be used for the possible future purchase of equipment that local students can use to study air quality. One unique donation to the Halloween benefit was the "sea horse," a plastic hobby horse found washed up on the beach and featured on the front page of the Sept. 15 edition of the News-Times. South Beach resident Roy Fielding found the horse during a walk, cleaned it up and donated it to CCCA. At the benefit the horse will be accompanied by a laminated copy of its front-page picture. Tom Kerns of Yachats, one of the CCCA board members, said, "Community members and local artists have been very supportive of our efforts and extremely generous in donating for our first public benefit." Art work available at the silent auction will include the sculpture "Sea Breeze" by Anna Wiancko, valued at $350, and the suminagashi print "Flounder and Azalea" on handmade paper by Marilyn Burkhardt, valued at $500. There will also be a Lillian Pitt mini mask, two Bill Kucha prints, plus works by Katy Adamson, Mimi Fox, Sal Strom, Susan Trueblood Stuart, Dale Bunse, photographer Laren Woolley, plus hand carved shore birds from Beaches, and more. One unique feature of this silent auction is the number of overnight stays. Coastal inns such as Oregon House south of Yachats, The Grand Victorian of Newport, and The Inn at Arch Rock of Depoe Bay have each offered a night's stay for two. Restaurant and beverage gift certificate donors include The Bay House of Lincoln City, Local Ocean Seafood, The Nye Beach Scoop, Panini Bakery and Hail Mary's Espresso of Newport, plus The Drift Inn, Grand Occasions and Green Salmon in Yachats, to name a few. Jewelry includes an original design necklace with fused glass centerpiece and appliqué beadwork and earrings from Deon's Designs; an amethyst necklace and bracelet from Halcyon Gallery; a dolphin hematite necklace, a dichroic glass pendant, and more. There will be more than a hundred items all together, including gifts for pets and their owners, a $40 gift certificate for organic produce at the 2007 Newport Farmers' Market, garden items like a bird house, bird feeder, a decorative angel, and in keeping with the Halloween season, a lovely garden spider ornament. The CCCA Halloween Party and Benefit will be a smoke-free and fragrance-free event. No alcoholic beverages will be served. To learn more about CCCA, visit www.concernedcitizensforcleanair.org
