Will Depoe Bay, Oregon have a Square Rigger Sea Battle in October, 2006?
Depoe Bay could become the scene of a mock battle between modern replicas of two classic square-rigger ships, the "Lady Washington" and the "Hawaiian Chieftain," as part of a broader "Treasure Depoe Bay" effort, Barry Philipott told the city council this week. "Treasure Depoe Bay" is a group of merchants, most of them members of the chamber of commerce, who have been looking for a way to bring more visitors and more business to town; but they came up with something bigger, Philipott said. The original idea was to emphasize the town's nautical themes, its beauty, and its capacity for fun. Now, the expectation is to also be able to raise funds to build a new, improved community center. "Everybody in the group like the idea," he said, and it "went over great" at the chamber. As its ideas came more into focus, the group coalesced and took the name "Treasure Depoe Bay." It holds open meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month, he said. October 7, 2006 would be "a non-conflicting date" on which the group, working with the city, could organize a combined hunt/race, where teams of four, dressed in pirate regalia, race around the town to find and solve clues at various places along the Depoe Bay main corridor. Doubloons would be earned by solving the clues and the team that wins the most doubloons in the shortest time would win a treasure chest. Prizes would be awarded for first, second and third place, as well as the best team costumes and best individual costumes. PIRATE TREASURE HUNT The date has been set! October 7th (Saturday morning) Start time is 10 a.m. Starting Place: The old Depoe Bay Community Center, down at the docks. Oooo... aaargh me mateys, come and join in the Pirate Treasure Hunt, down 'ere at Depoe Bay! Get them pirates together and get 'em motivated or you'll have to beat 'em until morale improves!... get some value out of 'em villains, work as team they should... tell 'em, more 'eads together are better than no 'eads atall!!!! Come 'ere and have some fun, discover Depoe Bay and find out what makes each other tick and 'ow to get the best out of yer mates.... if they lives to walk the plank they can rides the waves back to Cutthroat Island (the office) and know for certain who is the weakest link and lost 'em the treasure... aaargh! All pirates are greeted with a matey welcome from Depoe Bay. Teams need to be formed (up to 4 per team), names and crew roles decided and it's time for the pirates to don the attire! Before they can board their themed vessel (or start the hunt) a pirate trivia quiz and walking of the plank must be completed. Clues and activities abound are part of the action for the hours centered around the harbour. It is a race with scavenger possibilities and a treasure at the end of the rainbow! Back on dry land there is an Awards Presentation aboard the "Bounty Ship" with smoke, bells and whiskey... or whistles! We be havin' all kinds of pirates, matey.... we gots boys pirates and girls pirates.... all just as cutthroat as the other. We be havin' Blackbeard, William Kidd, Bartholomew Roberts, Mary Read, Anne Bonny, Henry Morgan and Calico Jack Rackham.... to name a few. We be lookin' for a fiery spirit and knowin' how to use yer pistol an yer cutlass. We be needin' ya do do some readin' lads and lasses.... polishin' up on your pirate speak and pirate trivia..... if you don't .... you be walkin' the plank land lubber! We be livin' by the "Pirate Code" in Depoe Bay. From the words of Mary Read when she was captured and sentenced by hanging in 1720 in St. Jago de la Vega, Jamaica: "That as to hanging, it is no great hardship, for were it not for that, every cowardly fellow would turn pirate and so unfit the Seas, that men of courage must starve." So whatcha waitin' fer? You wanna be havin' another villian get the treasure first and take all the bounty? And a bounty is tis mate! And the bounty be growin' daily. Get your reservations early. Entry forms bein' sent out.... get 'em completed and back. Dem entry fees to be goin' up after the deadline, land lubbers. Each team will receive a Captain's Log, map, pencil and a booty bag. Each team has to provide for themselves a digital camera and compass. Race will be staggered start and timed. Friday night there will be a meeting at the Community Center to hand out team packet information with your team start time. On purpose the Treasure Hunt starts at the Community Center. So you can see what your entry fee is being used for. It's for a worthy cause..... to build a new Community Center for Depoe Bay. To help the Kids Zone, the teenagers and senior citizens. The doubloons would be large coin-sized circles with a drawing of the Depoe Bay Highway 101 bridge and a treasure chest on one side, and a pirate-looking skull and crossbones on the other. The Oct. 7 date would be the Saturday before Columbus Day, and the group is contemplating ways to extend the event into a three-day attraction. Additional revenue could be brought in by the sale of posters and T-shirts, Philipott said, and could total $20,000. A three-day event that draws 2,000 visitors could produce $210,000 for the town's economy, the group calculated. Perhaps the most exciting piece of the concept, he said, is the possibility both the Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain will be off the central Oregon coast on the proposed date. These two are scheduled to be heading south to Sausalito then, he said, "and hopefully there's a pretty good chance they'd stop by at Depoe Bay." The ships could not fit under the bridge, but could make themselves available in the bay just west of the Highway between North Point and South Point. Having the two ships present, he said, would provide a variety of educational opportunities, including the staging of a "mock square rigger battle." The group has created a website at www.treasuredepoebay.com.
